Within the AMMOD research project, the moth scanner automated the classic light-trap idea: an illuminated screen drew nocturnal insects, a camera photographed those that settled, and models identified them from the images — a non-lethal alternative to killing jars. The Computer Vision Group at the University of Jena published on this problem of automated visual monitoring of nocturnal insects.
